The Chain Specifications and Dimensions

Cutting chains come in many configurations, but for replacement or specification purposes, these cutting chains reduce some critical dimensions.

Gauges

The specification of the chain is the thickness of the driving link, which is determined by the specification of the chain. The usual specifications are .050 inches (1.3 mm)-.058 inches (1.5 mm) and .063 inches (1.6 mm). The chain and the gauge must match; a chain that is too large will not fit, and a chain that is too small will be suitable for falling sideways, resulting in poor cuts.

asphalt

The chain pitch is the average distance between two rivets. As the distance between the rivets changes, the distance can be measured by measuring the distance between the three rivets and dividing the distance by two. Typical pitches are 0.325 inches, 3/8 inches (0.375) and 0.404 inches. 3/4 inches are used for harvester applications and are rarely used for hand-held cutting. The pitch of the chain must match the drive sprocket and front sprocket (if installed). The sprocket and rim can be a single unit or separate.

length

The chain link must have an appropriate length to operate safely. This is described by the number of drive links. The number depends on the length and type of rod, the size of the sprocket and the overall structure of the saw. For replacement, it is only necessary to calculate the drive link on the old chain.

Chain life

The teeth of the chain have a certain length. Wear and sharpening can cause teeth to become shorter. When the top of the head is too short, it will reach the service life.

Interval between sharpening

When the saw starts to vibrate or cut poorly, the saw chain must be smoothed. When cutting, the operator can easily feel the vibration in the handle, and the operation of the engine is more difficult.

Identification chain

The length, specification and quantity of the transmission rod are perforated on the side of the saw rod. This information can be found near the saw head. Since the saw blade should be rotated 180 degrees between sharpenings, the punching information can be directed towards the saw head or outside.

Determine the appropriate chain

Refer to the saw's manual to determine which chain/chain combination is compatible with the saw. A given saw usually accepts many different bars and chains.
